ECS in Florence and Siena

We have recently returned from a short trip to Florence and Sienna – a concert and two services were punctuated by a fascinating tour of the renaissance architecture of Florence by an expert choir member, excellent food and good company.

It was a rare treat to sing in two fascinating churches – St Marks Florence and St Peter’s Siena with music ranging from Peter Aston, Faure and Stainer through to Byrd and Gibbons. Wherever we went we were ably accompanied by our host, St Mark’s organist Peter Shepherd.

Sunday Eucharist at St Marks, at which ECS sang alongside the regular church choir a, was followed by a private visit to the church by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Some of our choir members caught a glimpse from the pavement outside (photo Petra Sleeman):

2017 Events

European Cathedral Singers will be be singing in Florence and Sienna in the last weekend of March. Our summer cathedral visit is to York Minster from Monday August 7th to Sunday August 13th, where we will be singing in all services while the choir is on holiday.

Our annual Choral Festival this year will be held in The Hague on Saturday 10th June 2017.

We also held a very successful choral workshop in The Hague in February: Byrd Songs and other Music, led By Christina Edelen.

Holy Trinity Pro-Cathedral will present the Bach Johannes-Passion at 19H on Good Friday, 25 March 2016. Entry is free, but online registration is required at www.passiontoperform.eu. Holy Trinity is at Rue Capitaine Crespel 29, 1050 Bruxelles (near Metro Louise).

The Evangelist is Joris Bosman and Christus is Ivan Ludlow, with a fine team of supporting soloists and chorus, and an orchestra of graduates of the Royal Conservatories. Further details on www.passiontoperform.eu.

The beauty of Gloucester Cathedral

Quite apart from the wonderful organ and acoustic at Gloucester, it is an incredible privilege to be surrounded by some of the finest english church architecture in existence (and our own in-house heritage expert to explain some of it!).

The cloisters are a very quiet and peaceful part of the Cathedral. It is easy to imagine these cloisters in use when they were first built hundreds of years ago.

Choir members admire the surroundings as we assemble before a service.

Singing at Gloucester – a glimpse of the process

We are now about halfway through our week singing at Gloucester Cathedral where we support the cathedral in its daily business while the Cathedral Choir are on holiday. Following a restful day off on Thursday, we are now gearing up for the rest of the week, with Evensong each evening as well as the regular Sunday morning service to come. Each day the pile of music becomes a little more manageable as we run through the repertoire for the week with music from all eras – so far including composers from JS Bach to Morten Lauridsen via English favourites such as Charles Wood and T Tertius Noble. The full musical programme will be published on this website when we return.
